Tradition has it Mary was a prostitute before meeting Christ. The Gnostic Gospels, however, insist she was Christ’s favorite disciple, equal to if not surpassing the traditional twelve. The Gnostic Gospel of Philip even portrays Christ and the Magdalene as lovers.
