Gnosticism, like Catharism posited the existence of two Gods: one, the úFirst Principle” which did not take part in creation, and a lesser demiurge called Ialdabaoth or Samael, the God of the Old Testament. Samael was in turn was created by a heavenly being descended from the First Principle known as “Sophia,” Greek for wisdom.
