Julien questions the owner of the tenament
where the young prostitute was murdered. The
slum lord reveals he saw a mysterious man in
a white suit walking nearby at the time of the
young streetwalker's death. He also gives Julien
the name of the prostitute's pimp: George Lipp.
Later, Julien consults his friend and sometime
patient, Rabbi Albert Maiselles about the smell
of sandalwood and sulphur in the crypt. Maiselles
tells Julien the smell is associated with magical
automata, creatures like golems. At the end
of the day, Julien finds an unexpected note
from an ex-lover.
Early the next morning, the Man in White breaks
into Marin's home and kills the elderly father.
