Julien learns of Father Marin's death from the Holy Inquisition. They warn him off the case, but now his quest for the missing scroll is personal.

He finds a note from Marin pointing to a clue hidden in The Shepherds of Arcadia, a painting by the seventeenth century painter Nicholas Poussin. The painting depicts a group of shepherds around a tomb engraved with the motto “ET IN ARCADIA EGO”.

Later, Julien meets with his ex-lover Dr. Genevieve Tournon. While Julien has struggled, Geneveive has been appointed personal physician to the Duke of Lorraine, a powerful politician with imperialist designs on the Holy Land.

Julien and Genevieve rekindle their relationship.
